(A) EXECUTIVE MBA IN AGRI-BUSINESS

1.1       Philosophy

The Executive Master of Business Administration (EMBA) Agri-Business programme has been developed on the fundamental assumption that agriculture is business. Thus, agricultural ventures must, therefore, be well managed in order to achieve the desired goals especially in the ever-changing global economy.

1.2       Objectives

The EMBA programme in Agri-Business seeks to:

  • Prepare candidates to carry out the duties and responsibilities in government and industrial establishments, statutory corporations and parastatals as they relate to the business of agriculture.
  • Help students acquire leadership skills, human relations, analytical, evaluative, qualitative and communicative skills needed for management of agribusinesses.
  • Expose students to integrative, interdisciplinary and dynamic nature of business and administrative processes especially as they relate to agricultural undertakings.

1.3       Scope

The EMBA programme in Agri-Business cuts across various areas in agribusiness and industry. Students will complete relevant courses in agribusiness related areas in addition to project work in their areas of interest.

1.4       Entry Requirements

Candidates for the EMBA programme in Agri-Business shall have the following:

  • Minimum of five years working experience in the industry
  • Bachelors’ degree or Higher National Diploma (HND) in any relevant discipline (Agriculture, Agricultural Economics, Economics, Engineering, Banking and Finance, Management, Marketing, Accountancy, Public Relations, etc.)

Admission is twice in a year: April and October.

1.5       Mode of Study

The mode of study for the EMBA programme in Agri-Business shall be by course work, organisational case studies, seminars and project reports.

1.6       Duration

The duration for the Executive MBA programme shall be four (4) semesters. This is a weekend programme of which there shall be one (1) contact per month.

1.7       Employment Opportunities

The EMBA programme in Agri-Business prepares students to improve professionalism in business practices and entrepreneurship development. The programme equally trains them to fill middle and senior level management positions in business, commerce, industry, and government. With their education and training, they can set up their own businesses since the programme also emphasises self-employment and consultancy.

Students are introduced to the rudiments of strategy and ethics in business organisations. Topics include: Concept of management; Principles of strategic management; Professionalism in management; Ethical issues in the practice of management.

The course exposes students to the core principles of the practice of Accounting. Topics include: Management accounting practice; Auditing principles and processes; Accounting theory and corporate reporting

EMB 807        Issues in Banking and Finance                              (2 units)

Students are introduced to concepts and trends in banking and finance. Topics include: Money and its relevance to business and the economy; Sources of business finance; Bank lending and its implications for business; Aspects of financial management/corporate finance; Monetary and fiscal policies.

EMB 822  Entrepreneurship and Corporate Social Responsibility (2 units

This course introduces students to varying facets of entrepreneurship. Topics include: The entrepreneur and entrepreneurship; Personal characteristics of entrepreneurs; Theories of entrepreneurship development; Identification of ideas and venture capital opportunities; Record keeping; Business plans; Entrepreneurial Practice – success and failure; The entrepreneur in micro, small, medium and large-scale enterprises.

EMB 824        Research Methodology                                   (2 units)

Students are introduced to the definition and types of research problems associated with the discipline, especially in developing countries. Topics include: Application of scientific methods in the study and analysis of business activities; Research designs; Data collection methods; Sampling techniques; Data analysis methods, Measurement scales; Interpretation and presentation of business research results; Applications of research in business problem-solving.

EMB 826        Leadership in Business Organisations           (2 units)

The course utilises relevant case studies that focus on guiding business organisations to higher productivity, managing people and conflict resolution in the functional areas of business organisations. Topics include: Issues on effective leadership skills; Ethics; Emotional intelligence; Creative thinking, etc.

EMB 828        Funds Flow and International Capital Markets  (2 units)

The course introduces students to international capital flows and markets.  Topics include: Overview of the international financial system and institutions; International banking and financial markets; International capital markets, notably the Eurobond and global equity markets, and the markets for derivatives; Foreign exchange market, the Eurocurrency and related money markets; Regional financial integration in ECOWAS, and Africa, etc.

EAG  831       Seminar on Agricultural Business Management  (2 units)

The focus of this seminar is on operating techniques and business skills used in the modern food and fibre industry. Others include skills needed to manage small and medium size businesses in agricultural and allied industries.

EAG 833        Seminar on Agricultural Financing                  (2 units)

The focus of this seminar is on access to finance for agricultural businesses. Different sources of financing – local and international, risk in agricultural financing and their mitigants, etc.

EAG 835        Seminar on Agricultural Co-operatives and Warehousing (2 units)

The focus should be on farmers’ co-operatives, agricultural production co-operatives, supply co-operatives as well as storage and warehousing of agricultural produce, etc.

EAG 837        Seminar on Agricultural Marketing and Trading   (2 units)

The focus should cover services involved in moving agricultural products from the farm to the consumer. This will involve activities such as planning production, growing and harvesting, grading, packing and packaging, transport, storage, agro and food processing, distributions, advertising and selling, etc.

EAG 839        Seminar on Agricultural Value Chain                (2 units)

The focus of this seminar should be on activities and actions that improve a product while linking commodity producers to processors and the market. Various aspects of product value chains will be targeted.

EAG 890        Case Project Report                                            (4 units)

Candidate is required to write a case project report on an approved topic which will be defended before the supervisor and any other person appointed by the Co-ordinator of Studies (MBA Programmes).

(B) EXECUTIVE MBA IN CREDIT AND FINANCIAL RISK MANAGEMENT

EPM 833 Development Economics, Innovation and Entrepreneurship Policy           (2 Units)

The course exposes students to the rudiments of development, innovation and entrepreneurship. Topics include: Advanced theories of economic growth and development; Impact of industrial, commercial and agricultural policies; Import substitution, export promotion, foreign aid, demonstration effects; Introduction to survey data analysis; Poverty as a multidimensional concept and its correlates; Income distribution and analysis of pro-poor growth; The entrepreneur as a factor of production; The various roles of the entrepreneur in nation building; Government and entrepreneurship development in emerging economies;  Developing entrepreneurial capacity and innovation theories and applications.

EPM 835        Public Sector Economics                                                                           (2 Units)

The course introduces students to the elements of public sector economics. Topics include: The nature of the public sector; Economic rationale for state intervention; First and second fundamental theorems of welfare economics; Assumptions under which markets are efficient; Types of intervention, intervention and social justice; Public goods and preference revelation; Characteristics of public goods, free rider problem, optimal provision of public goods; Theory of public finance: theory of public revenue and expenditure, fiscal federalism, taxation and fiscal policy, public debt, government subsidy.

EPM 837        Econometrics                                                                                              (2 Units)

The course introduces students to the application of econometrics to situations and events. Topics include: Introduction to cross-sectional and panel data analysis: panel data models, first difference estimator; Fixed effect and random effects models; Limited dependent variable models: probit, logit, bivariate probit and multinomial logit models; Method of simulated maximum likelihood; Time series econometrics: testing for stationarity, multivariate and single equation cointegration analysis and the estimation of error correction models; Structural breaks; VAR Models; ARIMA and GARCH models; Introduction to macroeconometric model building; Introduction to forecasting and simulations.

EPM 839        Policy Analysis and Implementation                                                       (2 Units)

The course introduces students to the fundamentals and techniques for initiating and analysing policies of varied nature, especially in the areas of economics, finance, and industry. Topics include: Rationale, objects and elements of policies; Techniques of analysis; Policy implementation, monitoring and review, etc.

EPM 890        Case Project Report                                                                                  (4 Units)

On completion of the course work, candidate is required to write a case project report on an approved topic which will be defended before the supervisor and any other person appointed by the Coordinator of Studies (EMBA Programme).

(D) EXECUTIVE MBA IN ENTERPRISE RESOURCE PLANNING

1.1       Philosophy

The Executive Master of Business Administration (EMBA) in Enterprise Resource Planning as a programme has been developed to equip the student with a broad knowledge of business in order to gain a competitive edge over others with the use of softwares to enhance business processes and practices. To this end, emphasis is placed upon professional education of the entire individual and in providing him/her with effective strategies to boost performance in his/her career.

1.2       Objectives

The EMBA programme in Enterprise Resource Planning seeks to:

  1. Prepare candidates who will be proficient in the configuration, use, and strategic application of ERP software across a wide range of business functions
  2. Teach students the ins and outs of the ERP software by SAP, one of the top vendors in the market place.
  • Prepare candidates to carry out their duties and responsibilities in government and industrial establishments, business undertakings, statutory corporations and parastatals with the aid of Enterprise Resource Planning software.

This course introduces students to varying facets of entrepreneurship. The course introduces students to international capital flows and markets.  Topics include: Overview of the international financial system and institutions; International banking and financial markets; International capital markets, notably the Eurobond and global equity markets, and the markets for derivatives; Foreign exchange market, the Eurocurrency and related money markets; Regional financial integration in ECOWAS, and Africa, etc.

This course introduces students to the basic philosophies and critical ethical issues that should guide business sustainability. Topics include: Moral philosophy of ethics; Business behaviour; Ethical hospitality behaviour; Social contract and social responsibility; Ethical practice and corporate governance; the Customer at the epicentre of business activities; Fairness, trust, caring, confidence, quality and standards in products and services, etc.

The course introduces students to the fundamentals and techniques for initiating and analysing policies of varied nature, especially in the areas of economics, finance, and industry. Topics include: Rationale, objects and elements of policies; Techniques of analysis; Policy implementation, monitoring and review, etc.

EMB 835        Ventures and Globalisation                                                                      (2 units)

This module provides an overview of past and current trends of globalisation with emphasis on its main drivers, which can be understood as old and new sources of global dynamism, turbulence and change. It brings the perspective of the rising developing powers and it discusses the various consequences of globalisation. It also discusses the set of policies that are required in different areas, such as international trade or finance, to manage and integrate business in the global economy and achieve a more positive outcome from globalisation. Topics include: Ventures – types of international business ventures; The concept of globalisation, its processes and impact on global business; Difference between comparative and absolute advantage; Negative and global inflows and processes; The global economic, legal, competitive, technological, and social environment; The future of globalisation.

This seminar exposes students to different issues in digital financing and electronic payment system. Topics include: Concept of digital currency and electronic money; Electronic cash and information communication technology (ICT); Electronic payment systems; Fundamentals of FinTech and electronic banking activities; FinTech operations and implications for commerce and agriculture; Regulatory implications and role of government, etc.

Students are introduced to financial technological issues. Topics include: Introduction to financial technologies; Financial innovations and their disruptive effects; Blockchain technologies and application in the finance industry – cryptocurrency operations; FinTech operation and implications on commerce and agriculture; Regulatory implications and role of government, etc.

EFT 890         Case Project Report                                                                                  (4 units)

Candidate is required to write a case project report on an approved topic which will be defended before the supervisor and any other person appointed by the Co-ordinator of Studies (Executive Masters Programmes).

EXECUTIVE MBA IN INFRASTRUCTURE FINANCE AND PUBLIC PROJECT MANAGEMENT

1.1       Philosophy

The Executive Master of Business Administration (EMBA) in Infrastructure Finance and Public Project Management is designed to provide guidelines on the financial structuring for funding infrastructural and public sector projects in other to minimise risks, and ensure that funders’ objectives (expected returns or social benefits) are achieved. Students will learn basic skills in designing project cash flow models, identify market sources for funding infrastructure development, public private partnership (PPP) and other project financing models.

1.2       Objectives

The EMBA programme in Infrastructure Finance and Public Project Management seeks to:

  1. Develop the relevant skillset for the management and funding of public infrastructure.
  2. Promote specialist understanding of the peculiarities of public infrastructure and alternative funding methods.
  3. Emphasise the need for Public Private Partnership model for public project management and funding.

1.3       Scope

The EMBA programme in Infrastructure Finance and Public Project Management cuts across various areas in the appraisal of public projects, approvals and management of public projects, cost benefit and cost effectiveness analyses, and other traditional evaluation techniques for commercial and social projects. Students will complete relevant courses in related areas in addition to project report in their areas of interest.

1.4       Entry Requirements

Candidates for the EMBA programme in Infrastructure Finance and Public Project Management shall have the following:

  • Minimum of three years working experience in the industry
  • Bachelors’ degree or Higher National Diploma (HND) in any relevant discipline (Economics, Public Administration, Political Science, Banking, Finance, etc.). Holders of professional qualifications such as ACCA, ACA, ACIB, MNIM, ACIA and others in Public Administration, Social Works and other Social Sciences are encouraged to apply.

Admission is twice in a year: April and October.

1.5       Mode of Study

The mode of study for the EMBA programme in Infrastructure Finance and Public Project Management shall be by course work, organisational case studies, seminars, and project reports.

1.6       Duration

The duration for the Executive MBA programme shall be four (4) semesters. This is a weekend programme of which there shall be one (1) contact per month.

1.7       Employment Opportunities

The EMBA programme in Infrastructure Finance and Public Project Management prepares students for a career in public administration and equips political office holders and managers of public resources for greater efficiency and effectiveness in the management of public infrastructure. In addition, donor organisations will find graduates of this programmeinvaluable for the management of grants and aids.

This course is designed to guide students in the mechanisms of Economics for managerial decision-making. Topics include: Understanding the micro and macro environment of business (specifically the macroeconomic variables); Demand and supply; Types of market models; Theory of games.

EMB 803        Strategic Management and Business Ethics                                            (2 Units)

Students are introduced to the rudiments of strategy and ethics in business organisations. Topics include: Concept of management; Principles of strategic management; Professionalism in management; Ethical issues in the practice of management.

EMB 805        Accounting Practice                                                                                   (2 units)

The course exposes students to the core principles of the practice of Accounting. Topics include: Management accounting practice; Auditing principles and processes; Accounting theory and corporate reporting

This seminar discusses relevant issues with regards to public project appraisal. Topics include: Project finance structuring – cash flow analysis; Repayment profiles and coverage ratios; Key project finance ratios – sponsors’ perspective; Finance projections – development of financial model; Concepts of the internal rate of returns (IRR) and net present value (NPV); Cash flows available for debt service; Debt service cover ratios, etc.
